Santa Hat Scrunchie FREE PATTERN

My girls have been rather into scrunchies lately, and I have made a few lovely velvety ones using Flutterby Chunky yarn by JamesCBrett. But as the Christmas season is beginning to occupy my mind, I had the desire to create a seasonal scrunchie for my girls. I found some red yarn in my stash, and was then excited by the idea of making the rim soft and velvety! My flutterby yarn was the perfect solution, and the difference in texture really finished this scrunch off nicely!

The pattern is written in UK crochet terms. Here are the abbreviations and US equivalents.

ch: chain (US chain)

dc: double crochet (US single crochet)

dtr: double treble (US treble)

sl st: slip stitch (US slip stitch)

You will need:

Red yarn (I used a worsted weight yarn, not sure of the brand as I can't remember where it came from!)

4.5mm hook

White/cream yarn for the rim (This could be velvety yarn, but would be equally fun with a normal yarn)

A hair elastic (I used red as I happened to find one ink my girl's stash. Another colour would work fine though)

Yarn needle for sewing in ends

Here's the pattern, enjoy!

Begin by tying the yarn to the hair elastic.

Place the hook through the elastic, yarn over, pull the yarn under the elastic, yarn over again and pull through the loop on your hook. You are now ready to start chaining.

Round 1: Ch 2. Dtr around the elastic, and continue repeating this until the whole elastic is full. You will get the wavy effect on the scrunchies by squeezing more dtr into your elastic!

Join with a sl st to the top of your first ch 2. Fasten off.

Round 2: Join white/cream yarn to top of first dtr.

Ch 1. Dc into each st around the scrunchies. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

You now have a really quick, super easy scrunchie. Stocking fillers galore!
