Ribbed Cowl Pattern (One Skein Caron Cake)

Do you ever look at a skein of yarn, and instantly think of someone you know? That's what happened to me when I was browsing through my stash, and saw the remains of this Caron Cake in the soft and squishy 'Cake Pop' colour way. The beachy colours made me think of my good friend who has a birthday coming up, so I set aside some time to think about what she would definitely like to wear. I considered a scarf, but really like wearing cowls myself, so thought she'd love one of these too! I like my gifts to be useful and pretty, so I decided to make something for the upcoming autumn season! We will soon be back to school runs and windy, overcast days here in the UK, so why not be prepared! #autumnprep

I usually use a 5mm hook with a Caron Cake, but I knew I wanted this cowl to have a little more bounce and stretch. I went for a 9mm hook, and the cowl is so comfy and squishy, I know it was the right choice!

This cowl is designed to wrap around twice, and it feels really warm and cosy once it's on. The best thing about it is, it only uses one skein of a Caron Cake! I am forever trying to find beautiful patterns online that use only one skein, as it's so tempting once I'm in a yarn shop to buy something because I have fallen in love with the colour, but don't really have a pattern in mind. So I buy one skein and am never quite sure what to do with it! Eeeek! I sometimes regret it, and wish I had bought more of the same colour, but there are lovely, quick and easy gifts that CAN be made with one skein, and this pattern falls into that category. Let's get making!

I must add, this was super fast to make. In just a couple of hours, I had a lovely gift ready to wrap, and the really good part is, there was no counting stitches once I had done my first row. I could catch up on Netflix, and get lots of crochet done at the same time. I could also have a conversation with my husband, without having to go into that staring, head bobbing position, when I am trying to count stitches, but someone is waiting for a reply and wondering why I am being so strange! #winwin

Pattern Notes: The cowl begins with a long chain, which is the full length of the cowl. You will then crochet back and forth, making the cowl as wide as you need. I had already used this Caron Cake for some handles on a bag, so if you were using a new Caron Cake, you could make the cowl even wider if preferred. The pattern is written in US terms.
