Child's Spring Slipper Tutorial

Pattern Notes
These slippers are crocheted in the round, starting with the toe.
I didn’t slip stitch at the end of each round, I just used a hairpin (or a stitch marker would do the proper job!) to mark the last stitch of each round, up until the end of round 5. Then I continued to crochet in the round without marking the last stitch, and used a tape measure to make sure my two slippers were equal!
NB I have used US terminology for stitches, because that is how I learnt from youtube. If you know UK stitches, the UK dc is called sc in this pattern.
Yarn: I used Rico Creative Cotton Print
Weight: Aran
Hook: 4mm
Abbreviations:
ch= chain
sc= single crochet
sl st= slip stitch
Let's get started!

Start with a magic ring (if this stitch is new to you, find a tutorial on youtube for a magic ring. It's a really useful starter to know for patterns that crochet in the round. Took me a while to master, but well worth it in the long run!)
Round 1
Ch 2, 7sc into ring.

Pull the loose end of your magic ring to tighten the toe (see pic below)

Before you start round 2, add your stitch marker to the final 7th sc into the ring. This will help you keep track of your rounds.
Round 2
Alternate 1sc, then 2sc into each stitch, until you reach your stitch marker. Take out stitch marker, begin round 3, then replace stitch marker.

Round 3
Alternate 1sc then 2sc into each stitch, until you reach your stitch marker. Take out stitch marker, begin round 4, then replace stitch marker.
Round 4
Alternate 1sc, 1sc, then 2sc into each stitch, until you reach your stitch marker. Take out stitch marker, begin round 5, then replace stitch marker.
Round 5
Alternate 1sc, 1sc, then 2sc into each stitch, until you reach your stitch marker. Take out stitch marker, begin round 6, then replace stitch marker.
Round 6 onwards...
1sc into each stitch
(I took out my stitch marker once I had started round 6, as from this point onwards you don't need to count rounds. You will use a tape measure to decide when to stop the toe section)

Continue with 1 sc into each stitch until the toe measures the correct length for the foot required. You could easily hold to your child’s foot and continue until you feel the toe is the right length and will stay on well. Don’t forget to measure it though, so that you can make the 2nd slipper exactly the same as the 1st!
My daughter is 5 years old and I stopped her toe section at 6cm.

Foot arch and heel
Stop the 1sc stitches at the appropriate length for your child’s toe section, and then 1ch.

Turn, sc into each stitch, until you have 8 stitches left
undone.
1ch, turn.
Sc into each stitch, until you reach the other side of the slipper (still leaving 8 stitches undone)

Repeat 1ch, turn, sc into each stitch.
Continue until the slipper reaches the length required for the end to fit the heel of your child’s foot. My daughter's foot was 16cm.

Heel
Fold heel ends together and join by either sewing up the heel using a needle, or I gave my heels a thicker finish by passing hook through both heel stitches, hooking yarn over and pulling back through. I repeated this all the way down the heel until all stitches had been joined.
For extra strength I repeated this back up to the top of the heel, so that my yarn was ready to sc all the way around the top edge of the slipper for a neat sl st finish. Voila!

Here is a photo of my daughter wearing her new slippers!
I hope the tutorial was helpful. You can of course adjust this to the size of your child's foot, by adjusting the length of the toe and full slipper. If you want to make for a much older child, I am working on a pattern for teenager/adult. Watch this space!
This is my first pattern, so if anything doesn't quite work for you or if you have any questions, please feel free to message me or leave a comment. I am may not know the answer, but I will do my best to find out!
